Prosecution Announces Arrest of Rideshare Driver
A man who was working as a driver for a well-known rideshare company was recently arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor passenger inside of his vehicle. The prosecutors announced charges on Thursday against Julio Mejia, who is 39 years old and currently a resident of the Wharton, New Jersey area. It is believed that Mejia first came in contact with the victim when he was providing a ride to the individual while offering taxi services for a rideshare company. The incident is alleged to have happened somewhere between late August and September of 2019.
Mejia has since been charged with sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and several other charges that are directly related to the incident that occurred. While he has received a slew of charges for the alleged crime, he has not yet been convicted because a full investigation is still underway. During the investigation, more information was learned about Mejia, who currently serves in the military and was working for the rideshare company on a part-time basis. Mejia currently has a pretrial conference date coming up in which he will stand before Superior Court Judge, Donna Gallucio.
While Mejia has been arrested and charged with serious crimes that could lead to major consequences if he is convicted of those crimes, he is currently considered innocent until he is proven guilty in the courtroom based on factual evidence provided by the prosecution team. The prosecutors and the defense attorney will need to work feverishly on both sides to build their case while they proceed with the court hearings. In the meantime, Mejia is being held at a detention center while he is awaiting his pretrial conference with the judge to learn more about the charges that he is currently facing.
